Sanding and Restoration Service
Are your existing hardwood floors tired or heavily warn? Have you recently moved into a new house that needs work? Perhaps you’ve had a flooding issue, moved a wall, or taken out a fireplace? Maybe your new pet has struggled with housebreaking issues?
Regardless of the cause of the damage to your wooden floors our sanding and restoration service can help you.
One of the key characteristics of a wood floor is that even the most tired and loved floor can be renovated, and repaired to return it to its intrinsic beauty.
Our skilled team of flooring contractors can replace damaged boards in your existing floor with a similar type and grade of wood as the current flooring. We may also fill in cracks and gaps with a custom filler.
Professional Sanding
Even after years of wear and tear we can machine sand your floor to vastly improve it. Using belt sanders, dust extractors and other professional equipment we will achieve the finest finish your home deserves.
At all times there is minimum disruption and mess because we use specialist machines which are virtually dust free. This minimises the impact on the rest of your living space whilst your floor is refurbished.
Floor sanding involves the removal process of the top surface of a wooden floor, sanding the floorboards with different grades of abrasives. All hardwood and softwood floors can be sanded. We are experienced in restoring oak, parquet, engineered, pine boards, mahogany, teak, maple and beech wood floors to name but a few.
Superior Finish
Some floors may need more than just sanding. They may also need boards or blocks replacing, blocks stuck down and gaps filled. This is a process our fully trained staff are well used to undertaking.
Once fully sanded and repaired we apply a quality finish with a choice of hardwearing easily maintained lacquer or hard wax oils. These enhance the appearance of any home, community hall or commercial premises. Opt for lacquer to ensure that your wooden floor is easy to care for, or a traditional wax which produces the warm, mellow patina that comes with age.
With a range of lacquers and oils to choose from we are certain that you will be delighted with your floor. Pick from Osmo oil (Natural and colours), Sadolin’s or Maldon’s lacquers.
With Bishops you can trust that whether we renovate an old floor or install a distressed oak floor, the quality will speak for itself, year after year.
Affordability
Is it cheaper to refinish or replace hardwood floors?
You can almost always bet that floor repairs, sanding and refinishing original floorboards is cheaper than replacing hardwood floors. With the latter, you’d be paying not only for the new wood but also for the labor of ripping out the old wood and disposal.

Floor Sanding Equipment and Experience
An exceptionally high quality finish to your hardwood floor can only be achieved by experienced craftsmen using good quality equipment. Every professional floor sander would agree.
A conventional drum sander, that is available from most hire shops, will not give you the best chance to sand your floor well. Especially if you rarely sand floors. Extra care is needed. It is easy to sand too deep, ruin your floorboards beyond repair and leave yourself needing to replace them.
For a high quality finish to your wood floor renovations you will also need a good edging sander. We use reliable edging machines that can deal with a variety of issues. Paint, tar, all manner of leftover adhesives stuck to the edges of any floor. By having the right equipment in the right hands we are able to give you crisp clean edges right up to your skirting boards.
Staining and Coloured Oil
If your preference is for a darker shade of colour than the natural look your flooring currently has then we can help. We are able to machine sand off existing floor finishes and apply either a water based wood dye, with a wide variety of colours, or coloured hard wax oil. This will help achieve your required finished effect.
We would then apply the relevant hard wearing lacquers or oil finishes over the top to ensure a hard wearing and long lasting product. The final finishes are available in a range from satin to extra matt.
Finishing Equipment
Once your floors are well sanded they can be finished. A floor buffer is the perfect tool for getting that polished, immaculate finish after fine sanding.
We can machine buff polished floors to leave them shiny but not slippery. This is particularly important for commercial flooring and flooring in schools etc where larger numbers of the general public use them frequently.
Floor buffers work by rubbing a fine abrasive pad over the floor. It takes experience and skill to use this machine correctly. It requires a light hand and intense concentration.
